Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Gaming

  • Scrabble: The Birmingham Scrabble Club - meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Gardendale Public Library at 6 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Details: 822-2438.

Chess Anyone?
  • Sunday - Books-A-Million at Brookwood Village 2:00 pm. Cost is free.
  • Monday - Bridge Club 2116 Columbiana Road Vestavia 7:00 - 10:00. Cost is $1. This group is mostly adults and would welcome mature well-supervised children who already have some knowledge of chess.
  • Monday - Mountain Brook Emmet O'Neal Library 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Age 7 to adult. Chess Master available at each meeting.
  • Thursday - Trussville Library 4:00 pm Sep 7 - Oct 26. Meet new friends as you practice your chess skills. Beginners are especially welcome.
  • Friday - Greystone YMCA offer beginning (3:45-4:30) an intermediate lessons (4:40-5:15) on Friday. It's $20 for the entire semester. First class was last week, but you can come at any time. My youngest son, Matthew, really enjoyed it! And, just next to that YMCA is a McAlisters. They are offering free kids meals for the month of February. 1 adult meal gets 2 free kids meals. We go every Friday between violin and chess.

Would you like to learn to play chess? Mr. Richard Ellis, who is well known in the chess community, has kindly offered to teach free chess lessons by appointment only. You may contact Mr. Richard Ellis at (205) 979-6068.
