Briana Moore ~ NE Jefferson County
Homeschooling, for our family, is a lifestyle. We are an
unschooling family and spend a tremendous amount of time living life and
learning all about “the little things”. The boys always have questions, which
we answer to the best of our ability and then follow-up with research!
My wonderful husband, Wayne, and I have been married for 17
years and have two comedic boys ~ Alex who was 15 in February and Zeke who will
be 12 in October. They constantly keep us on our toes….but we wouldn’t want it
any other way!
We are quite blessed to have my whole family involved in
homeschooling! My sister Sherah, who is also an Everest Academy Activity
Coordinator, homeschools our other sister’s three children. We also all live
together on about 30 acres affectionately called the “Funny Farm”. The three
households have a variety of critters, albeit most are ours. In addition to the
traditional family pets, we top off the variety with lots of chickens,
some ducks, a goose, a few guinea fowl, and even a Black Widow spider. It’s no
lie that it is a lot of work to take care of our 100+ “pets”, but we enjoy our
accomplishments and work towards self-sufficiency. We are also avid recyclers
and spend a lot of time doing eco-friendly activities and research.
This is our 8th year of homeschooling, and what an adventure
it has turned out to be! Public school would never provide the opportunity to
research and learn about all the things that interest us: our pets, the
multitude of other wildlife that we come across, something the boys find or ask
about, something we see in person or in a movie or on TV, or just something out
of the blue! As an unschooling family, we “school” 24/7, 365 days a year. I
feel that you cannot possibly go an entire day without learning something and
there is a lesson in every moment of life, if you look for it! With this in
mind, my husband and I spend a lot of time explaining the how’s and why’s of
things in an attempt to help our boys develop reasoning skills as well as an
understanding of the cause-effect relationship that is above and beyond that of
a public school education.
