Everest Academy is sponsored by Everest Family Ministry in the Birmingham Metro Area. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Energyville

Energyville is a game sponsored by Chevron.  In the game, students have to provide enough power to meet the energy demands of a city with a 5.9 million person population.  As they play, they must keep the city prosperous, secure, and clean.  The energy decisions that students make for the city in 2015 are based on current lifestyles and the projected energy demands and costs for developed countries in North America, Europe, and Asia.  The Energyville game environment is a lot like SimCity in the way that students build and maintain the city.  Students begin by dragging energy sources to the city to bring it to life.  Students can choose from biomass, coal, hydro, natural gas, nuclear, petroleum, solar, and wind.  As they add energy sources to the city, they can observe the impacts on the economy, environment, and security of the city.  The goal is to keep the impact low.  There is a comparison chart where students can view the impact of the different energy sources on the environment, economy, and security to aid them in their decision-making.  As students move their mouse over the different energy sources, they can read about that energy source in the Energy Advisor panel.

The Table - Volunteer to Help Feed the Homeless

The TableVolunteer to Help Feed Hungry, Homeless Men and Women in the Birmingham Area with Local Organization "The Table"

The Table is a grassroots effort to provide food - and hope - to hungry and homeless people in the Birmingham, Alabama area.  Every Saturday and Sunday, volunteers from the community prepare food in their homes and bring it to a homeless shelter where it served with love to men and women who are in need.  The volunteers bring the food to the table and serve the guests as they would in their own home.

The motto of The Table is "Always room for one more."  The goal is for each meal to feel like a family dinner where everyone is welcome.

The Table is not an organization in the traditional sense.  There are no officers, no by-laws, and no meetings.  It is a movement, a spirit, that provides love and hope to those in our community who need it the most.

Everyone is encouraged to participate.  It is a great opportunity for youth groups to be part of something special.

For more information, please contact Chris Retan atChris_Retan@Yahoo.com or visit www.thetableonline.org.

Homeschool Scholarships

2010 Homeschool Graduate Makes Scholarship Road Easier for Others
OCEAN PARK, WA—After spending much of the past year hunting down scholarships available to home-schooled students, David Craft realized there was a problem. “There are lots of scholarships available only to those in traditional schools, but none to speak of just for homeschooled students,” he lamented. “When I searched online for ‘homeschool scholarships’ I came up with only a few results, most of which had nothing to do with homeschooling.”
When David saw that many scholarships were in the $200 to $500 range, he realized there were businesses run by home school families who could probably also offer scholarships. “Perhaps they had just never thought of doing it,” he said.” It’s an important concern, because while some general scholarships invite homeschoolers to apply, the forms are designed for students in traditional schools. They place a lot of emphasis on class rank, and often have several pages asking for involvement in student government, school clubs, and student leadership positions. Homeschooled students are clearly the underdogs in these competitions.”
David, along with the support of his family, has launched a new Website located at homeschoolscholarships.org. The two-fold purpose, as stated on the site, is “to inspire businesses and individuals to recognize the unique potential of homeschooled students by creating scholarships designed for them, and to provide a place for homeschooled students to find those scholarships.” Businesses who provide scholarships will be given a link to their own Web site.
Not destined to become another of the many scholarship search sites, this site will feature only those scholarships designed specifically for homeschool students, or scholarships that have a proven record of being homeschool-friendly. David hopes the homeschool community throughout the nation will help provide him with little-known scholarship opportunities to post on his site. He’s well on his way with 15 homeschool-specific scholarships already listed, and hopes to grow the list as more businesses and organizations decide to take the challenge. David can be contacted through the Web site.
Homeschool organizations are invited to link to homeschoolscholarships.org if they believe the Web site will be of service to homeschool families.

Discovery Clubs of Alabama Volunteer Opportunity

Debbi - Can you please forward this to the Everest group or include it in your next newsletter? I wanted to share an opportunity that some of the teens or moms might be interested in. My family has recently gotten involved with the Discovery Clubs of Alabama. This organization provides an opportunity to share Jesus with kids in public schools all through out Jefferson county. The Discovery Clubs conduct an after school bible club in 100 schools in the Birmingham area. Volunteers can serve as little as 2 hours per week (one club meeting) or choose to get more involved and help with multiple clubs. It's a great opportunity to share the love of Jesus, to share God's love with kids who may not attend church or ever hear God's word, to show love to a child who is hungry for positive attention. I'm including a link to their website below. Training for volunteers begins in August so it's not too late to get involved for the upcoming school year!

To serve as a volunteer, you must be at least 16 years old so I thought this would be a great opportunity for some of the teens in our home school group. Also, moms who may want to get involved but have kids younger than 16 are also welcome and can bring their children along with them when they serve! I have been assured that my twin 10 year old daughters are more than welcome to come along with me when I perform my volunteer duties.

I hope some of you will prayerfully consider this opportunity to share God's love in the public schools with children who so desperately need to hear it!

KUDOS to Everest

KUDOS for Everest Academy
Updated Dec. 21, 2010

Every once in a while, I will get a request from prospective new families for references. So, several months ago I sent a message out in the newsletter asking for references.  Below I have listed some of the responses (There were WAY too many to list them all!).  Thanks ever so much to EVERY one who replied.  You all mean so much to me!

Please note:  Some of the references have email addresses included.  These email addresses were active at the time that the reference was provided (but you know how those email addresses tend to change from time to time!).  If you try to email someone and it bounces, please let me know.
  • I have been with Everest Academy since 2007. It has been a great experience and Deb Spradlin the Administrator is great to work with. Would recommend Everest to anyone wanting to homeschool. ~Regina L Kent.
  • My name is Debbie Carden, and I live in Tuscaloosa, AL. Although I am a public school teacher, I have been homeschooling my son since 7th grade. In 7th grade, we went with a local cover-school and we were not happy with the experience. We considered just sending my son back to public school but luckily we found Everest Academy. I can't even begin to tell you how happy we have been with Everest. My son is now in his junior year and we have talked about moving out of state and the only thing holding us back is he wants to finish his homeschool career with Everest. Debbi Spradlin is FULL of knowledge and always willing to help. Her newsletters are fantastic and give you so many options of things to do, there is no way you could ever do them all. The people in Everest Academy are very eclectic but they are all really nice. I am so glad that I found Everest Academy because it has really made my son's homeschool experience a fantastic one! You can not go wrong by joining Everest Academy! If you have any questions, I would be glad to answer them. My e-mail address is: zacsmomdeb@yahoo.com

  • Our family has homeschooled through Everest Academy for several years and has never been happier with a cover school. We have two daughters ages 15 and 12 (in 2010).  Debbie Spradlin is our ideal of an administrator: she offers a wealth of homeschool-related information, including informational articles, links to everything necessary to homeschool through graduation, free and low-cost activities, field trips from the local zoo to DisneyWorld, Mexican cruises, and more. Everest offers a huge buffet of options from which to pick as you find the need. We really appreciate not having to attend meetings, request approvals, fill out forms, reports, etc. Ms. Spradlin knows Alabama law regarding home educating and her attitude that the parents know best how to educate their own children is evident in all she does.  ---Kristen Lindelow, Huntsville, Alabama
  • Our family has greatly enjoyed being a part of Everest for the past year.  We love the variety, quantity and quality of activities that Everest provides.  ~Cindy Wentworth Wentworthbutterfly@yahoo.com
  • The administrator provides wonderful support; anytime I need anything, she responds very quickly, sometimes going to a lot of trouble to get me what I need.  ~Tonia M. Stulting
  • Everest Academy provides a wealth of information and opportunities to its students and families.  ~Christine Ecklund cwe35758@yahoo.com
  • "Being an Everest Academy family means having the freedom to educate our children our way."  Thank you for all you do.  ~Kelley Gregory
  • I am writing to express my gratitude to Everest Academy. It's a pleasure to work with Debbi who knows the meaning of efficiency and professionalism. You have made my transition to home schooling a piece of cake.  ~Christie Gody cgody@c2cresources.com
  • We love Everest. With Everest Academy, we are free to truly homeschool in the way that works best for our family. They offer a buffet of options, and we are free to utilize the options that we want, without judgment for not participating in other options. After so much drama and catty-ness in other groups, Everest is very refreshing!  ~Terri LaPoint
  • Everest Academy (through Deb) is a great cover school and provides many, many resources, field trips and other activities.  I would (and often do) recommend it to anyone!  ~Jeannine Whitley

  • This is my second year with Everest Academy and we are very pleased. Everest provides an enormous amount of home schooling information/activities for all ages. Deb respects each family's method to home school without the burden of excessive paperwork and rules. Deb also responds quickly to e-mails.  ~Eva Nave
  • Everest Academy has given us the guidance that we had been looking for prior to enrolling.  Assistance is only an email away and we have always received a quick response to our numerous questions.  I would recommend Everest Academy to anyone.  ~Chrissy Benson
  • Everest Academy has been the perfect balance of the freedom that we wanted and the support we needed. ~Chris Roberson
  • “Everest Academy is a custom adapting cover school. They have as many activities as you could ever want to do, while still leaving all the choices up to you! Its perfect!”~Emily Rainer
  • Since finding Everest, my children have loved homeschooling even more. Deb is a wonderful and very helpful supporter. I am very thankful for her and Everest to be a part of our home schooling adventure. The first cover school we used had no field trips or park days or anything for the kids to do, but at Everest there is something every week (usually every day almost) for us to go and meet new friends or see old ones. I highly recommend Everest Academy to anyone even thinking of homeschool especially all my friends or anybody that I meet! Hope to see you around Everest very soon :)  ~Patricia (Trysha) Hollie
  • "We love that Everest Academy offers so many great opportunities to the homeschool community and always look forward to seeing what new things will be offered each year. Everest also offers many ways to stay informed of upcoming opportunities which makes it a great resource for homeschoolers."  ~Briana Moore
  • Choosing Everest Academy was one of the best decisions we have made.  ~J. White maysmami@yahoo.com http://shoalsareahomeschooling.ning.com/
  • Everest Academy provides outstanding support to it's families so they can be successful every step of the way - no matter how long or why a family chooses to home school.  ~Judy Cornelius judycorny@charter.net
  • As a former teacher, sometimes you have to look further than traditional schooling for an education.  Everest Academy, Debbi Spradlin in particular, has been incredible.  She has worked with me on getting my own child and other kids out of schooling woes to homeschooling wows!  I am extremely thorough in my research, I do not put my name on anything that I cannot stand behind 100% and as you can see, I proudly recommend Everest Academy.  ~Jayne Pierce
  • We loved the time we spent as homeschoolers with Everest Academy.  Deb, the director, is so connected with what is going on throughout the state and the regional directors plan a wide variety of educational opportunities.  I am in awe of just how much we were missing with other coverings!  I feel confident that someone in her network of families could address any question that might come up regarding homeschooling, education or plain old anything you wanted to try or do!  ~Donna Satterlee Ross dsatterleeross@gmail.com
  • "I love that Everest Academy allows us the discretion to choose how and when to school our children, but also how they work so hard to make us aware of the educational opportunities available.  It's really the best of both worlds: lots of freedom and less stress!"  -Jennifer Berry (jberry@ironicdesign.com)
  • "Blessings! Everest has been a wonderful fit for our family. We have a micro-farm, small business, and a love for travel. Everest gave us the freedom to transform our busy life into a home school family. I love the choices available to the kids and the variety of families and activity options. Learning in the freedom of educational choices for us was the reason we considered Everest, but it's the hard work of Deb and the families at Everest that have kept us enrolled!"  ~Steven and Shellina Ryals
  • "I'm so glad we chose Everest Academy as our cover school!  Deb's weekly newsletter is filled with activities for homeschoolers across the state.  She finds fun events and unique classes, coordinates field trips, and helps families connect.  Online enrollment and renewal couldn't be easier.  Best part is that she respects parents constitutional rights and does not require meetings, documentation (report cards, curriculum approval, etc.) or religious affiliation that many cover schools demand.  Alabama is a wonderful state for homeschooling freedom and Everest Academy truly supports that!"
    ~The O'Connor Family

Branches of Power

In Branches of Power, students can play all three branches of government, all working cooperatively toward the goal of building new laws.  As President, students will choose issues they think are important and rally people around them.  As Legislator, they will create bills around the values of the constituents.  As Justice, they will uphold the law or take out legislation that is unconstitutional.  The only way to navigate the game successfully is to cooperatively construct laws around the issues of the country.  (Our government probably has something to learn about the cooperatively part.) Students will find issues that the citizens care about.  By using the three branches of government, they can grow the issues into laws which appear as towers.  They win if they build all ten issues into towers before time runs out.  Students get the opportunity to play as all three branches, they have to stay on top of it, if they don’t, the branch may start making decisions on its own!

Special Needs Homeschooling - "Welcome to Holland"

Hi Deb,
I found this on a blog this morning and as a mom of an autistic child it really resonated with me. I'm passing it along in case you happen to know a parent or two who have also 'ended up in Holland'. : )
Kristin Mumper
WELCOME TO HOLLAND
by Emily Perl Kingsley

When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip -- to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."

"Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."

But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."

And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away... because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.

But... if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland

Geography Resources, Maps, & Facts for Students

Geography Resources

Geography is all around us.  It’s what makes countries different – both in terms of landscape as well as in terms of culture.  Geography is the study of where places are, but it's also the study of who lives in those places, what the places look like, and how those places developed, socially and geologically, into its modern form.
Help kids get interested and excited about geography and about the world they live in with these helpful resources, which include geography games, interactive maps, and fun facts.
