Everest Academy is sponsored by Everest Family Ministry in the Birmingham Metro Area. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Bill of Rights Game

Age Range: 10 and up (approximately)

The National Constitution Center in Philadelphia provides this fun, free game that helps students learn about the Bill of Rights. The premise is that the "National Computer" has crashed and deleted parts of the Bill of Rights! Your mission is to navigate through a map of a community called Freeville and identify the rights being used there to restore the document to its original content.

When you get to the site you will see a message that the computer has crashed. Click "Start" and the game map opens. Click on the landmarks to see a picture that depicts one of the 8 missing rights. Then, answer a multiple choice question to identify the missing right and help restore the document.  A correct answer adds the text back into the Bill of Rights that you'll see displayed on the right hand side of the screen.

If this game sparks interest in the U.S. Constitution, don't miss exploring the "Interactive Constitution" housed at the National Constitution Center Museum to learn more.

Waltee’s Quest: The Case of the Lost Art

The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland has one of the most incredible site for students I have seen.  Waltee’s Quest is an interactive adventure where students help solve a mystery and discover a variety of art along the way.  Students begin their adventure by watching an introduction animation of the Walters Art Museum where inside curator Waltee is getting ready for an exhibit and preparing the museum for visitors.  While Waltee is preparing, lightning strikes, the elevator shakes, and a wild whirlwind takes all the museum treasures with it.  Students ride a magical elevator to travel to different worlds in an effort to find the lost art.  As students explore the different rooms, they discover treasures and learn about the real museum items. Students can click “Learn more” every time they discover a new item and the “Walteepedia” opens up with more information. This is truly one of the most engaging, interactive, sites I have seen.  I love that the site drops students in the middle of a story mystery and enlists their help to right the museum.  As students explore each room they learn more about history, see incredible artwork, and get an inside peek into being a museum curator.  The graphics and attention to detail are really amazing!

Bham Zoo Teaching Position

Birmingham Zoo
Hi Everyone,

We have two part-time teaching positions available within the education department that we hope to fill immediately, and part-time summer camp teaching positions that we started interviewing for starting as of this week. If  you are interested, or you know of anyone who might be interested, please visit http://www.birminghamzoo.com/employment/ for more information on the positions and instructions on how to apply.

FYI - The summer camp position descriptions may not be posted on the Zoo's website until next week.

Here is just a bit about each position:
·         The education teacher position will deal mostly with our informal education classes that have our 6 month to 5 years of age group and our homeschoolers that range from 1-9 grade (and 10-12 grade oncewe are back to full staff).
·         The zooschool position deals strictly with 7th graders in a more traditional classroom setting (although we still utilize what the Zoo has to offer). We are looking for someone who would feel comfortable teaching the science portion of the class. They do not have to have a science background.
·         The summer camp teaching positions are for full-day and half-day camps. You can find more information on our summer camps athttp://www.birminghamzoo.com/education/summer-camps/ If you are interested, please send your cover letter, resume, and Birmingham Zoo employment application to bkutsch@birminghamzoo.com You can download an employment application athttp://www.birminghamzoo.com/employment/

Little Bird Tales

Little Bird Tales is a new way to digital story tell with primary students.  With Little Bird Tales, students can upload their own artwork, record their voice, add text and email their finished creations to family and friends. Sign up on Little Bird Tales requires an email address for verification purposes.  This can be a parent email address (the site is geared for 3 to 14-year-old children so a student address is not necessary).  Little Bird Tales includes a built-in art pad where students can create pictures online.  They also have the option to upload photographs and images they have created offline.  Each page give students a place to add a picture, text and voice recording.  Finished books can be saved and accessed online or sent via email.  Students can use Little Bird Tales for creative writing and imaginative stories, as a way to reflect on learning, or as a keepsake for parents.  Students can take pictures of science experiments and create a digital science journal detailing the experiment with text and student voice reflections included.

Everest Academy Participation Policy:
  • Please check your email the morning of any field trip for last minute cancellations or instructions, especially during inclement weather.
  • Please show up if you sign up (especially for limited or FREE trips - It reflects badly on homeschoolers as a whole when we have 100 people sign up and 10 people show up)
  • Please DO NOT show up if you have not signed up (if a RSVP is required).
  • Please arrive on time.
  • Each child MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult. "Drop offs" are not allowed.
  • Please make sure that field trips are age appropriate for your children.
  • Children should be supervised at all times.
  • Make sure to follow any rules/policies set forth by the establishment we are visiting.
  • Children are expected to behave. Disruptive families will be asked to leave the event.
  • There is a zero tolerance rule for any acts of violence, abusive behavior, profanity, or illegal activities.
  • We take lots of pictures which may appear on the Everest Academy website or Alabama Homeschooling Facebook page (no names listed without permission)
  • Everest Academy is not responsible for any injuries, theft, or loss of personal property at any events. All participants take full responsibility for their children and attend events "at your own risk".
  • All events are family friendly.  Drugs and alcohol use is prohibited.
  • Everest Academy reserves the right to update this policy as needed.
Participation Restrictions
Participation restrictions will be enforced for any families who do not follow the Everest Academy Participation Policy:
  • Warning 1 - Written notification of complaint with Participation Policy will be sent via email.
  • Warning 2 - Written notification of complaint, Participation Policy, and notification that there will be one more warning before restrictions are enforced.
  • Warning 3 - Written notification of complaint, Participation Policy, and three-month restriction from activities will be sent via email.
  • Warning 4 - Written notification of complaint, Participation Policy, and remainder of the school year restriction from activities will be sent via email.
Please note that the above plan is only a generality and that participation restrictions will be set in proportion to the level of the severity of the behavior.  Everest Academy reserves the right to restrict any family from any and all field trips/activities.

Disclaimer: With all field trips, Everest Academy suggests that you research the subject matter to determine if each field trip is appropriate for your family.  All field trips are offered on an optional basis and not required.  Field trips are offered as an educational outlet only and does not constitute endorsement of the organization or beliefs.

The Visual Dictionary

Age Range: All (with parental supervision)

It offers a free online Visual Dictionary. It's different from a regular dictionary. Instead of just word definitions, it provides colorful visual images that enhance the meaning of the words and concepts you explore. Concise textual definitions (in three languages) are included, but it's secondary to the images.

When you get to the site, you'll see an icon menu of the list of topics that are in The Visual Dictionary. I suggest you click on "List of Topics" on the menu tab because then you can see each topic area with a drop-down list of what it covers as follows:
*Vegetal Biology - See images (with text) that define and describe plant cell structure, structure of a leaf, leaf shapes, types of roots, flower germination, diagram of the stages of mitosis, fruits, vegetables, and much more.
*Animal Biology - Learn about the structure of a bacterial cell or an amoeba or paramecium, find out about the anatomy of an earthworm, starfish, jellyfish, snake, frog, fish, shark, fly, bee, cricket, spider, bird, bat, cat, dog, deer, gorilla and more.
*Human Biology - Explore cells, muscles, skeletal system, finger nails, parts of a tooth, nervous system, eyes, ears, nasal and oral cavities, digestive system, respiratory system, human heart, reproductive system, and more.
*Music - Discover a wide variety of instruments from around the world including Europe, India, China, Africa, and South America. Get info on percussion, wind, brass, and string instruments. Learn about music notation.
*Transport - Learn all about automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, trains, boats, planes, hot air balloons, and rockets. Get details on engines, air filters, brakes, shock absorbers, tires, and more.  Explore roads and bridges.

*Clothing - Everything you ever wanted to know about clothing and accessories including info on cultural differences in styles. Check out uniforms and costumes too!

In addition to the visual images in this dictionary, you'll also find some videos that promote learning.

This is a great reference tool. Just exploring The Visual Dictionary is sure to springboard interest in a wide variety of topics. Bookmark it to return often.

We Choose the Moon

We Choose the Moon -   The site drops students right into history where they get to witness, and take part in the Apollo 11 launch and mission.  Time travel might not exist yet, but I’m telling you, this site is the next best thing.  Students actually hear all of the chatter from Mission Control, control the launch, view all 11 stages of the mission, read mission transmission, and follow the mission  in “real-time”.  I cannot say enough about how truly awesome this experience is for students.  At each stage, students can explore more in-depth by looking through actual pictures from the mission, videos (including JFK’s We Choose the Moon speech), and a “map” of the stages Apollo 11 took to get to the moon.

Science Animation Gallery

Science Animation Gallery:  Sumanas, Inc has created a complete animation gallery for science.  Each animation comes with a written summary description, a narrated animation, a step-through tutorial (understanding the concept through a series of steps), and a quiz.  There are a variety of main topics, each with several related animation modules.  In the gallery you will find General Biology, Molecular Biology, General Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biopsychology/Neuroscience, Ecology, Astronomy, Statistics, Chemistry, and Environmental Science.  There is also a Science in Focus section for animations that explain science topics that are in the news (stem cells, malaria, gene therapy, ulcers, antibiotic resistance, and anthrax).  These are great for current event science conversations and understandings.

How to integrate Science Animation Gallery: The Science Animation Gallery takes what can be difficult to understand concepts, and animates them in a way that breaks down the concept into manageable parts. Many of the science concepts are more appropriate for middle and high school students, but some sections, like Astronomy, include animations that are useful for elementary students (moon phases).  Students can use the animations to explore science concepts that they are interested in learning more about, or to further delve into a topic just touched on in curriculum.  Many of the animations would make a great launching point for science experiments and inquiry units.

Tips: Some of the animations are available for download and can be played on an iDevice or in iTunes.
