Everest Academy is sponsored by Everest Family Ministry in the Birmingham Metro Area. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Moms Says "No!" Book by Homeschooler

Dear Homeschool Group Leader:

I would be honored if you would pass this information along to your group. My 19 year-old son and I published this book together, making it a true “work of heart”. I believe that it serves as a testimony to all homeschoolfamilies. Home education is so much more than “doing school work at home”. Homeschool parents have the opportunity to nurture and cultivate the many talents that are born into our children, producing adults who are passionate about their work and grounded in the strength of the family structure.

Please visit the link below to preview our new children's book!
This simple, heart-warming story defines the connection between love and discipline. Told from a child's perspective, the main character feels unloved by his mother because she often tells him "no" when she corrects his behavior. All is resolved at bedtime when his mother declares her love for her son, explaining to him that mischievous behavior can never change a mother's love for her child.

About the Author:
Rebecca Gresch is a homeschool mother of 4 children, with number 5 on the way! This book was sketched and written when her oldest child, Adam, was only a baby. That was over twenty years ago.
Fast-forward to the Spring of 2011. Rebecca dusted off her crude, hand-drawn version of the book and set her mind on publishing it before the year's end. Her second oldest child, Joel jumped into the project, cleaning up the sketched illustrations and making them into the digital masterpieces that bring this story to life.

Joel Gresch is nineteen years old, majoring in Graphic Arts at Florida State College. This book represents his first published work in the graphic design industry. How fitting that this story about a boy and his mom was published with loving collaboration between mother and son.

Just Another Reason For Homeschooling: Bathroom Visits Limited

Don’t Go Mustangs! High School Limits Students’ Bathroom Visits

Evergreen Park (Ill.) High School, home of the Mustangs, allows teachers to limit their students to three bathroom breaks per semester. Students who go above the limit must stay after school to make up the missed class time.

According to the (Tinley Park) Southtown Star, Principal Bill Sanderson introduced the policy in response to teacher frustration. “How do we stop kids from going to the bathroom to get out of class, how do we make them accountable?” Sanderson said teachers asked him.

Some parents are angry. Cathi Diamond told the Star the bathroom-frequenting of a “small group of kids” was jeopardizing her daughter’s ability to attend drama club if she broke the rule simply answering nature’s call.

Linda Gigliello told the Star her daughter, Dominique, 15, had a history of urinary tract infections and may get more if she had to “hold it,” a statement she may have regretted the next time she spoke to her daughter.

Dr. David Zumerchik, a urologist contacted by the paper, said this would be unlikely, but he called the policy “silly.”

According to the school’s bell schedule, there are five minutes between classes. Dominique Gigliello told the Star this wasn’t enough time.

Principal Bill Sanderson told the Associated Press that the policy would deter students from missing valuable class time by pretending they needed to use the bathroom.

Mangahigh for K - 12

Mangahigh is a game based learning site where students can learn all about math. What is unique about Mangahigh math learning games is the way that the learning topics are addressed.  These aren’t your typical drill/skill math games that only address the four basic operations or introductory algebra skills.  The games adapt in difficulty to student levels as they play.  Games continue to challenge students without getting too difficult too quickly and frustrating kids.  The Mangahigh games encourage students to observe, hypothesize, test, evaluate and conclude. All games are based on the Common Core standards making it easy to integrate the games into your current curriculum.  Teachers get their very own login to Mangahigh where they can assign challenges, track student progress and use the games as a form of formative assessment.  The mathematics topic in Mangahigh are geared for elementary, middle and high school students (I am a big fan of site that meet a variety of ages and needs!).

IXL Math for PreK - Algebra

There are FREE and paid features to this site.

Ixl.com has lessons for PreK through Algebra. The list of skills that can be practiced on each level is vast. Some examples include: patterns, money, geometry, fractions, algebra, coordinate graphs, charts, logical reasoning and decimals.

Ixl.com has an adaptive learning system, where the difficulty of the questions increases as the children's skills improve.

Review:
I'm trying to find math that I can easily tailor to my son, since neither of us has the patience for Saxon and the public school book we are using breaks down everything into miniscule bits that seem to make the concepts more confusing instead of less. IXL looks promising. It has all the state core standards ("just the facts, ma'am"), with samples listed if you hover your mouse over each heading, so you'll know what they're talking about. Worksheets are available in each category . If parents wish to join, membership is $9.95 a month and allows children to do their work onsite and be tracked by IXL teachers. Otherwise, they can just use it for reference (which is what I'm doing) to find the specific areas where their children need help and just work on those.

There are also other subjects available by entering key words in the search box.

The Encyclopedia of Life

The Encyclopedia of Life (eol) is a beautiful website that celebrates the biodiversity of life. On the eol website, find podcasts where students can discover the diversity of life five minutes and one species at a time. Students can dig deeper into their learning with extra features like “Meet the Scientist”, “Educational Materials” or “Extras”. The “Extras” include Google Earth tours, videos, audio out-takes, images and contributions from listeners. Podcasts can be subscribed to via RSS or iTunes. The Encyclopedia of Life even provides a podcast guide for educators to use!  Teachers can create customized “Field Guides” on the eol website. These guides are collections of text and images from the eol website to fit your classroom needs.  Students can participate in their very own BioBlitz activities where they are led in observation of biodiversity in their own backyard.  The Tools page has great extra interactives and tools for students to use as they learn about life on earth. Find tools such as a Cool Iris eol plugin, Google Earth Species quizzes and Life Desk where students can create and contribute to eol.
