This course is primarily a basic safety course that teaches the student the basic skills and the necessity of safe handling of rifles. We will also teach the skills required to sight-in a rifle and how to properly hold and shoot the rifle for accuracy. We will do a lot of shooting, starting the first day. Parents are encouraged to come and “watch” the class. We will limit the class to 16 students (boys or girls). The age requirement for the class is
from 10 to 16. We have two type of rifles that we use for the class. First are Daisy 499 B-B guns. These guns are ideal for and will be used by the 10 to 11 year olds and some 12 year olds. The second rifle is the Daisy 853 pellet rifle. This rifle requires a certain amount of upper body strength to pump and generally kids under 12 have trouble with it. We will match the rifle with the student for size and strength. Both rifles have similar accuracy and sights. The rifles are furnished for the course.
The first meeting of the class will be Thursday, April 5, 2012. We meet at the Trussville Fire and Rescue Gym (Old Elem. School) located at 421 Cherokee Dr in Trussville (35173). The class begins at 4:00 P.M. and runs until 6:00 P.M. each Thursday. The class will last 10 weeks and will finish around June 7. It is important that the students attend each of the classes, especially the first 5 or 6, since the lessons build on each other.
The cost for the class is $25.00 per student. This covers the shooting supplies and the NRA Certificate at the end of the class.
This course is sponsored by the Jefferson Co 4-H, Trussville Fire and Rescue, and the Magic City Gun Club.
Contact Perry Mitchell for an application packet. E-mail is preferred, but call if necessary (leave a message with name and number).
