In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. Birmingham Zoo Homeschool Academy ~ Register Now, Classes start as early as Sept 6

The Birmingham Zoo offers Science education with a wild side!

The Birmingham Zoo Education Department has exciting, in-depth home school science classes for students in 1st through 12th grade. Classes can consist of animal visits, class discussions, in-class work, activities, labs, guided tours of the Zoo and homework. Some class materials will be sent home to aid students in their studies. Classes are designed to build on one another, but students are not required to attend all topics.
The limited spacing in these classes will fill up quickly. Please register in advance to guarantee a space.

Grades 1st - 3rd  *Cost is $8.00/student for members and $14.00/student for non-members
9:30 - 11:30am on the following days:
  1. Sept 6 ~ Plants
  2. Sept 20 ~ Insects
  3. Oct 4 ~ Herbivores, Carnivores, & Omnivores
  4. Oct 18 ~ The Food Chain
  5. Nov 1 ~ Animal Habitats
  6. Nov 15 ~ Aquatic Animals
  7. Dec 6 ~ Weather and Animals

Grades 4th - 6th  *Cost is $8.00/student for members and $14.00/student for non-members
1:00- 3:00pm on the following days:
  1. Sept 6 ~ Earth's Biomes
  2. Sept 20 ~ Migration
  3. Oct 4 ~ Vertebrates & Invertebrates
  4. Oct 18 ~ Human vs. Animal Systems
  5. Nov 1 ~ Mimicry & Camouflage
  6. Nov 15 ~ Hibernation
  7. Dec 6 ~ Conservation

Grades 7th - 12th  *Cost is $10.00/student for members and $16.00/student for non-members
1:30 - 4:00pm on the following days:
  1. Sept 27 ~ Classification
  2. Oct 11 ~ Reptiles & Amphibians
  3. Nov 8 ~ Birds
  4. Nov 29 ~ Hoofed Animals
