Gardendale
Ruth Williams, a retired teacher, and her husband, Doug, a Birmingham firefighter, have homeschooled since 2007. Homeschooling is an adventure at the Williams' house where they search for fun learning activities. During these years their children, Nathan and Cressie, have attended Junior Master Gardener, American Girl Club, Fresh Air Family Outdoor Adventure Club, 4H rifle safety class/competition rifle team, Junior Teen Scene and a variety of field trips through Everest Academy. The family favorite was the Fort Morgan camping trip to see bird banding and to tour the USS Alabama. They also had the opportunity to make creative, unique paperweights at Sloss Furnace Iron Pour and to search for shark's teeth at Shark's Tooth Creek.
The children have enjoyed classes at the Birmingham Zoo, McWane Center, Young Rembrant art, Scrollworks, Curt 'n Wendy dance, and area homeschool co-ops where Ruth taught elementary history, English and writing. Having a love of the arts, the family looks forward to exhibits, concerts and plays at Birmingham Museum of Art, Alys Stephens Center, Samford, and Children's Theatre. Nathan and Cressie attended Southern Artworks and are planning to attend Creative Scholars, Inc. Ruth enjoys reading and participates in a monthly book club. The family worships at Gardendale First Baptist Church.
