This course is primarily a basic safety course that teaches the student the basic skills and the necessity of safe handling of rifles. We will also teach the skills required to sight-in a rifle and how to properly hold and shoot the rifle for accuracy. We will do a lot of shooting, starting the first day. Parents are encouraged to come and “watch” the class.
The class is taught from the 4-H Basic Rifle Course Guidebook. The course also satisfies the NRA Basic Rifle course, and each student that completes the course and test at the end will receive an NRA Certificate of completion.
We will limit the class to 12 students (boys or girls). The age requirement for the class is from 12 to 16. We will use the Daisy 853 pellet rifle for the class. This is a single stroke air rifle and requires a certain amount of upper body strength to pump and generally kids under 12 have trouble with it. The rifles and pellets are furnished for the course.
The first meeting of the course will be Thursday, September 13, 2011. We meet at the Trussville Fire and Rescue Gym (Old Elem. School) located at 421 Cherokee Dr in Trussville (35173). The class begins at 4:00 P.M. and runs until 6:00 P.M. each Thursday. The class will last 10 weeks and will finish around November 15. It is important that the students attend each of the classes, especially the first 5 or 6, since the lessons build on each other. The cost for the course is $25.00 per student. This covers the shooting supplies and the NRA Certificate at the end of the class.
Students that successfully complete the course will be invited to join the MCGC/JEFFCO 4-H Shooting Team and continue to practice with the team and compete in the various matches we attend.
This course is sponsored by the Jefferson Co 4-H, the Trussville Fire and Rescue, and the Magic City Gun Club.
Contact Perry Mitchell for an application packet. E-mail is preferred, but call if necessary (leave a message with name and number).
