Everest Academy is sponsored by Everest Family Ministry in the Birmingham Metro Area. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

“Lighten Up!” is a 55-minute musical show, starring PBS's Slim Goodbody, designed to help children, in grades K-6, learn the value of exercise and good nutrition. The show deals with the serious problems of excess weight and obesity in an entertaining and totally non-threatening way. Children are encouraged to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed to make health-enhancing choices. In every musical number, the kids participate, by answering questions, volunteering, and moving along with Slim.

“Lighten Up!” explains MyPlate, the USDA's food guide, nutrition and how different kinds of foods affect the body. In addition, it explores issues such as junk food and why too much sugar and fat is harmful to health, media literacy and how advertisers influence our food choices, finding the proper balance between calories in and out, portion size and goal setting.

The show is standards-based, interactive, cross-curricular, multi-media based, innovative & information-packed.
