Everest Academy is sponsored by Everest Family Ministry in the Birmingham Metro Area. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

TED-Ed: Lessons (videos) worth sharing

TED-ed is a collection of educational video lessons that have been animated.  Each video on the TED-ed site has an associated lesson, a Quick Quiz with multiple choice comprehension questions, Think which asks questions to help students think more critically about what they have watched, and Dig Deeper which helps students to explore the topic further.  In addition to the videos, TED-ed gives educators the ability to “flip” videos.  You can use, tweak, or completely re-do any lesson that is featured on TED-Ed, or even create lessons from scratch based on any video from YouTube.  You can re-title a lesson, add context, questions and follow-up suggestions, and create a custom URL for your video lesson.  You can even track your student’s progress to see who has viewed the assigned video, the number of questions they attempted, the answers they provided, and the answers they got correct.

Video is a great medium for learning because it allows students to learn at their own pace and gives them the ability to replay as many times as they need to.  Visuals are always useful when learning something new, video is a great medium because of the way that it helps enhance understanding through the use of visuals.

Videos are searchable by those that have been featured, those that are part of a series or by subject.  Students can learn about the arts, business/economics, design/engineering/technology, health, literature/language, math, psychology, science/technology, and social studies.  The library will continue to grow as teachers flip the videos and TED-ed adds content from educators around the world.

How to Award Grades

Awarding Grades

Many new homeschoolers want to know how they should decide on what grades to award their children.  There are many different schools of thought on this subject.  While there is certainly a place in a school setting for grading, is there a place for grading in a home setting?  In a school setting, how else would one teacher for every 20 or so children be able to assess what their students do and do not understand?  In homeschooling, you have 24/7 contact with your child, and no one knows better than you how your child is progressing.  Some parents choose to stick to a more traditional approach to grading.  Some parents believe that homeschooling is about knowledge and not about a letter grade and do not grade their students at all and concentrate more on making sure their child knows the material thoroughly.  Whatever your school of thought is on this subject, there is no right or wrong answer to this question.  It is simply a matter of opinion.

The following information is for those who choose to award grades:

What kind of grades should you award?

Some parents choose to grade simply by using a pass/fail system.

Some parents choose to award letter grades such as those awarded in a school system.  Usually a letter grade is awarded on the following scale or something similar:

A     90 - 100
B     80 - 89
C     70 -79
D     60 - 69
F      59 or below
How do you get these grades?

You can determine grades by effort, written seat work, tests, worksheets, projects, oral recitation, time spent, or any combination of these as you see fitting.

How do you find a letter/number grade average?

Simply divide the number of problems correct by the total number of problems. For example, if the page has 14 problems and your child got 12 correct, divide 12 by 14 to get .857 or 86%.

You would get a final grade using the same method.  Simply add together all of your grades from tests, worksheets, and projects and divide by the total number possible.  This will give you the final grade.

That's all there is to it!  I hope this info helps!

The Scale of Life

The Scale of Life is flash based, and shows the size of objects relative to other objects.  Along the bottom of the site is a slider that lets students zoom in or out in size to see things relative to each other. Students can get as small as 0.0000000001 yoctometers to as large as size of the known universe.

The Scale of Life is a neat way for students to explore size, frscience and math.  Students can examine the scale of objects compared to other objects and make observations about size and purpose of the object in the universe.

Thoughts on Curriculum

Thoughts on Curriculum

Ahhhhh!  Curriculum!  That is the question of the day!  What should I get?  Where?  Is it expensive?  It can be...  Does it have to be?  No!  With Everest Academy, you are free to use whatever resources you would like to educate your child.  Some folks go all out and buy a whole brand new curriculum and spend a ton of money.  Some homeschoolers go to the library and spend $0 on their resources.  The choice is completely up to you!!!

You can go all out and get all the bells and whistles...  Do I recommend that?  No!

My rule of thumb is to NOT go out and spend a ton on curriculum.  Why?  You want your children to have the best, right?  Well, spending a ton of money does not necessarily mean you are getting the best.  It means you have spent a lot of money.  When you go out and spend a ton of money on curriculum, you feel like you have to use it...primarily because it cost a lot of money.  What if your  child hates it?  Then you are being counter productive.  Find the best resources you can find at the best cost that you can find them in order to be flexible.  When you are flexible, you can help your child love to learn.  So, what DO I suggest?

First of all, check out your local library.  This is my first and favorite resource.  This is ALWAYS my first stop when I am looking for a new resource.  It is a free resource that has endless possibilities.  You can virtually find everything you need here not only for subjects such as history, science, and literature, but my family has also used the library for subjects such as speed reading, sign language, typing, 10-Key, foreign language, Algebra, and on and on.  Most library systems have a library cooperative where they will send materials to your local library.  Also, check to see if your local library has a book club, teen club, crafts, tutors, and computer lessons.  Most libraries also have an area where they will sell used items such as books, magazines, CDs and movies.  I know that the Birmingham Public Library and Homewood Library both have an awesome used material area set up, and I have bought many quality resources there.  Not only do libraries carry books, they also carry books on tape, magazines, CDs, DVDs, VHS, etc...

Next, check out the local thrift store.  I have never been in an American's Thrift Store and not found quality educational materials and usually for under $1.  Don't just check out the book section either.  I have found the best resources in the toy department over where you find the games and puzzles.  Also, make sure to check out the magazine rack and the CDs.
Talk to other homeschoolers.  They are a great resource for quality educational materials.  Who wants all of those books hanging around for years?  There are usually umpteen used curriculum sales in the spring, and many homeschoolers bring materials to park day.  Don't forget to check out Ebay.

Don't forget to check out the boob tube...  Yes, that's right...  the T.V.  There are some great programs offered these days.  It's not just Sesame Street anymore.  You can find programming for Pre-School all the way through adult.  Check out stations such as The History Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery, etc...  Of course, I am not suggesting that all your child do is watch T.V., but what I am suggesting is looking to see what is offered and how it might benefit them.  Most channels and even individual shows offer wonderful websites, activities, and lesson plans.  Don't forget Netflix!  Netflix is a goldmine of documentaries, historical fiction, movies based on works or literature, etc...

And finally, the Internet...  Geez, you are really missing the boat if you do not have Internet access.  You can find everything you need for a quality education for free on the Internet.  If you find a site that you have to pay for, research a little more.  You can usually find the same thing or better for free.
