Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

June 15, Vestavia Hills: Word Smarts: Morphology Development & Advanced Decoding

April 2013
The Alabama Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (ALIDA)
announces
Word Smarts: Morphology Development & Advanced Decoding
With William Van Cleave

Date:  Saturday, June 15, 2013
Time: 8:30am to 3:30pm
Location: Vestavia Hills Board Of Education Office
1204 Montgomery Highway, Vestavia Hills, Alabama 35216

Beginning as early as third grade, students are introduced to textbooks filled with longer, multisyllabic words. As they progress through school, the caliber and complexity of that reading increases substantially. Students should begin to develop morphemic awareness -- or the knowledge that words are made up of meaning parts -- beginning in elementary school. Doing so will help the student whose word decoding abilities have plateaued to move to the next level -- for decoding, vocabulary development, and ultimately comprehension. In this interactive, hands-on workshop, William Van Cleave will guide participants through a brief examination of the origins of our language and the characteristics of the major languages of influence, a study of useful techniques for analyzing longer, multi-syllabic words, and an understanding of effective tools for instructing students of all ages in this valuable area.

Currently, William Van Cleave is in private practice as a teacher trainer and educational consultant. A nationally recognized speaker, he has presented across the country on teaching strategies for students with language- based learning difficulties.

Since 1995, William has conducted presentations and workshops at a number of public and private schools and conferences nationwide He has trained teachers in the Orton-Gillingham Approach, written expression, and morphology. Because of his high level of enthusiasm and energy, William particularly enjoys working with groups, whether it is visiting a school and sharing with its faculty or presenting at a national conference.

In 2004, William published the first edition of Everything You Want To Know & Exactly Where To Find It, a reference manual for Orton - Gillingham teachers and tutors. That publication was followed by a number of multisensory teaching materials. In 2012 he completed Writing Matters: Developing Sentence Skills for Students of All Ages, which complements several activities and card packs.

While handouts will be provided for the workshop, William recommends Everything You Want to Know & Exactly Where to Find It as a reference for this workshop information.

Contact William Van Cleave at vcedconsulting@aol.com if you are interested in ordering his reference manual at a special pre-conference discount price of $40. Participants who already own this tool should bring it to the workshop.
