Alabama Water Watch <http://www.alabamawaterwatch.org//> and Lee County 4-H <http://www.aces.edu/4-H-youth/AL4-H/> are offering a training and certification for students to attend a one day program regarding techniques used to monitor water quality in nearby streams. The purpose is to assess stream health using "aquatic bugs" (macroinvertebrates) as water pollution indicators. Training combines the use of field collections and an environmental game that simulates a stream bio-assessment. After receiving this training, students would be authorized to test streams for pollution and sign up for a local stream to test monthly, but there is no obligation to do anything beyond Sept 7. The program is open to all ages, but students in eighth grade and younger will need an adult to attend with them. Attendees who are not currently 4-H members will need to complete a registration form <http://www.aces.edu/fourh/docs/volunteers/Youth_Consent_Form.pdf> in order to attend.
Be prepared to get wet - wear water shoes, long pants, bug spray.
