Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Dothan Area: Amanda Martin

Dothan ~ Amanda Martin

Hi! My name is Amanda Martin, and I am the new activities coordinator for the Dothan area. (Sometimes you will see Mandy or Manda on my emails but I do go by Amanda :) ) I am new to Everest but not to homeschooling. You could say that I've "homeschooled" for 13 going on 14 years now, as of Feb. 2014 :) That is because my oldest will be turning 14, and we've always known we would homeschool, and life has been an everyday learning experience. Ha! Okay, so my oldest son is Micah and he is an 8th grader; then my second child Jillian is a young 6th grader. And our youngest, 5 yr old Mariam, is her own entity :) We sent her to our small church's private preschool and kindergarten last year and this year, then we will bring her home again next. Between taking care of aging parents in our home, homeschooling and activities, and volunteer/part-time work hours, I "needed" those morning hours and she needed more attention than I was able to give. Oh, and don't forget our fur kid, Belle and 2 beta fish!

Our "style" has been quite a mix over the years. Reading about new and different curriculum or methods has been a hobby of sorts for me. But in general, we have been eclectic/unschoolers with a classical bent. We are love, love, loving our new once-a-week classical co-op, where we work on memory work especially. I pull Mariam out to attend that, as well. Then we also have been involved with before or are currently involved in: *basketball*, football, baseball and t-ball, soccer, dance or gymnastics, karate, swim team, Scouts, Frontier Girls, art class, music lessons and lots of church activities. Yes, we stay busy these days! :) Did I mention that my dear hubby of 16+ years is in ministry as well? Busy busy! But I love my crazy homeschool life! And I can't wait to see you at our activities this year!
