Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Jr. Teen Scene/Teen Scene Coordinator:  Deborah Helms

Hello everyone! My name is Deborah Helms. I have been married to my husband David since 1989 and we have two boys, one 21 and the other 8. We began homeschooling in February of 1998, when our oldest was 6 and in Kindergarten. We have had many opportunities through homeschooling over the years. Some things we have been involved in is music, (including many orchestras), co-ops, chess, Lego Club, tennis, swim, basketball, Speech & Debate, 4-H, Scouts, soccer, Science labs, skating, bowling, Homeschool P.E. programs, theatre, service projects, Rifle Shooting, and more. Never let it be said that a homeschooler lacks social skills! There are always opportunities for interaction with others that provide positive experiences. Our oldest boy, Klinton began at Jefferson State Community College at 15, almost 16. At Jeff State, he was able to get some dual credits and get a good bit of his Core out of the way prior to going to UAB. He is currently in the process of completing his second major at UAB, which he decided to do because he had another year of scholarship left. He stays connected with music through playing his viola, violin & piano in various groups.

Mickey, our youngest, doesn’t know a stranger! We were blessed to be able to adopt him he has kept us involved in sports. He loves SPORTS! No matter the sport, he excels in anything physical. Because of his great love and ability in sports, my husband and I are back doing things many parents our age no longer do. For example, I have learned four strokes in swimming and love to swim now. I also bike with him. One of our favorite places to bike is Railroad Park.

I am a strange creature for cooking and baking. I have been called the Butterbean Lady from previous years demonstrating how to cook with Butterbeans for the Butterbean Festival in Pinson. I include beans in desserts, breads, etc. Few people ever know what they are eating. Some beans we eat are Adzuki, Anasazi, Black, Black-eye Peas, Garbanzo, Kidney, Lentil, Lima, Mung, Pinto, Great Northern, Navy, just to name a few. Our favorite has got to be the black bean brownies and a quinoa & black bean cumin dish.

David, my husband, works for UAB and is close to retiring. He has less than four years and then we will see what happens. He is looking forward to being able to write, draw, play his guitar, etc. when he is retired.

I look forward to working with everyone. Let’s homeschool!
