Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

North Alabama Secular Co-op

The North Alabama Secular Homeschooling group will begin planning homeschool co-op classes in 2014 that will most likely be scheduled 1-3 days per month. Anyone interested in participating in the planning of this group should request to join the North Alabama Secular Homeschooling group on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/NASHomeschool/), and send a friend request to the group administrator (https://www.facebook.com/ValerieMaddox). Information about planning meetings will be posted to the group.

This whole thing started around an interest in learning to sew, knit and crochet; however, we will be looking at core subjects after we get up and running, and any other electives that participants are interested in planning. In addition, we will try to host occasional special topics and guest speakers.

Teens will be called upon to take a strong leadership role in this group, as those who wish to participate will be called upon to design lesson plans and teach younger kids on occasion and possibly participate in a mentorship program.

Costs will be kept as minimal as possible, and parents will be required to volunteer for a minimum number of hours each month. I don't want anyone to miss this opportunity because of cost or time limitations, so we'll work with you as much as we can. Participants should be fully vested in helping the group operate on a shoestring budget. We can look at fundraisers or sponsorships as needed once things get under way.

Please note that this is a secular group and that no classes will be addressed from a Christian world view. Our group is founded on the principle of being respectful of everyone's right to believe what makes sense to them without trying to influence or convert anyone (that goes for politics as well as religion). The group has representatives from many religions, as well as atheists and agnostics. The goal is to maintain a comfortable environment for everyone.

Possible topics/projects: science labs, historical reinactments, foreign language groups, scholarship project groups, art, acting, public speaking, cooking, ACT prep, choosing a career, etc.
