Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. Gardendale: French, German, & Essay Writing Lessons

LANGUAGE CLASSES FOR HOMESCHOOLED STUDENTS in Gardendale:
FRENCH, GERMAN AND ESSAY-WRITING
FALL 2014
When: Tentative schedule - Mondays:September 15, September 22, September 29, October 6, October 13, October 20, October; the classes are only tentatively scheduled as follows:
Morning: French I for Speaking -11:00-12:00
German I for Speaking -12:45-1:45
Afternoon: German II for Reading* -2:15 – 3:15
Essay writing - 3:30 – 4:30
* and/or French II – depending on interest
Where: Tentatively - Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gardendale
Cost: For 7 1-hour classes:
$60.00 payable on the first class day
$30.00 payable on the first class day for siblings
Or:
$10.00 for drop-in
$5.00 for sibling drop-in
Prerequisites:

no previous language study is necessary for French I and German I; there is no prerequisite for German II, but the student should bring a German dictionary to class;
Description of classes:

French I is suitable for all ages from about 4 up; it involves building vocabulary and practicing conversation for everyday life and includes singing and games, acting out and stories – mostly speaking and listening comprehension;

German I is suitable for all ages from about 4 up; it involves building vocabulary and practicing conversation for everyday life and includes singing and games, acting out and stories – mostly speaking and listening comprehension;

German II/French II is most suitable for about ages 12 and up; we will be sitting around a table and focusing on reading stories and other short texts, building vocabulary, writing practice, taking dictation, spelling and grammar;

Writing the 5-paragraph essay – this class is most suitable for about ages 12 and up; the students will write a complete essay (500-1000 words); we will focus on how to choose a good topic, develop a thesis statement, do some simple research,write an outline, write paragraphs - and good sentences, write an introduction and a conclusion, edit and revise;
Instructor: Robin Jackson has a Ph.D. in German Literature with Minor in French and has lived in France and Germany/Austria. In addition to teaching German and French to homeschooled students in Birmingham, Robin has taught for 8 years at the University of Phoenix Online as an instructor in essay writing and has also taught German and French at the Alabama School of Fine Arts and at UAB.
I will provide certificates to document completion of the courses, and I can provide references for applications upon request.
