Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Nov. 24, Decatur: Hiking

Nov. 24
Hiking
1:00 p.m.

We love to hike and decided to set up a series of hikes around the state to some of our favorite locations and invite folks to join us! These will have limited advance notice to take advantage of the best weather. I injured my ankle in late summer so at least the rest of this year, our hikes will be flat and tame-but hopefully not boring. I hope to regain full use and strength and be able to tackle some rougher terrain after the new year!

Our first hike will be this coming Monday at Arrowhead Landing on the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge. This is a 4 mile loop trail, flat and graveled with no traffic. Leashed and kind dogs welcome to join, older kids may like to bike it-the gravel is deep and loose in places and may prove too hard for little bikers. Wear good shoes! Bring a snack, water and your camera.

Weather is currently calling for partly cloudy, 60 degrees and 10% chance of rain and windy. Wear something over your ears! Sunday is a 100% chance of rain, so be prepared for puddles.
We will see birds of all kinds on the walk and it's very easy going, a little over 2 miles along the river itself and then it turns up between the big I-65 river bridges for one mile-the bridges will be way over our heads! There are backwaters and mud flats on this stretch and we could see a good variety of wildlife. We have seen eagles, hawks, a zillion ducks, beaver, deer, fox, raccoon, even owls while out walking here.  The final short stretch back to the parking area is through a big field.
