This June, the Desert Island Supply Co. is partnering with Radio Free Alabama to offer four weeks of summer camp. Campers will learn the basics of radio production as they explore the art of poetry, fiction, playwriting and journalism.
Each camp runs Monday through Thursday, 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $110 per camper, which includes a snack and all materials. Registration links are located below. JUNE 1-4: The Art of Making Up Stuff: Fiction!Grades 2nd through 9th This camp will cover the basics of writing fiction, from landscape and setting to plot and character development. JUNE 15-18: He Said, She Said: Radio Drama and ScriptwritingGrades 2nd through 9th In this camp we will look over the history of Radio Drama, from the golden age of American Radio to the contemporary podcasters of today. We’ll use improv play and imaginative exercises to help us create new characters, plots and scenes for scripts of our own. The campers’ short radio plays will be broadcast on Radio Free Alabama and published on the DISCO website. Register for He Said, She Said: Radio Drama and Scriptwriting
JUNE 22-15: Stranger than Fiction: True Sound and Radio JournalismGrades 2nd through 9th Campers will learn from professional journalists the art of finding a great story. We’ll investigate what sounds are needed for a story and why. Campers will collaborate to develop the seeds of several stories and then will work individually to find different angles to cover, culminating in a radio program to be broadcast on Radio Free Alabama. Register for Stranger than Fiction: True Sound and Radio Journalism
The grade levels listed are meant as a guideline for parents to determine whether or not a workshop is suitable for their children. Students need to be able to read and write independently to attend DISCO workshops and camps.
