Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Jan. 1, 2016 (RSVP Deadline Dec. 30) Near Wren: New Year's Day Hike to Big Tree

New Year's Day Hike
10+miles
Big Tree, Sipsey Wilderness

Meet at the Trading Post parking lot at the intersection of 36 and 33 at 8:15 a.m. OR at the Borden Creek Trailhead at 9 a.m.

Bring water and lunch as well as a couple snacks.
Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather, have an additional layer along just in case as well as a headlamp or flashlight per person. I don't anticipate being out past dark, but it is a long hike.

We will walk back to the big tree and plan to spend an hour or so there enjoying lunch and exploring the small cove. If there's been rain, there are 2 waterfalls visible from the tree. We will return along the same trail. The trail is mostly level, but there is the initial climb up from the creek as well as the drop down into the canyon where the tree is located. Coming back, the parking area is at the top of a hill, so that's the last bit of the hike-uphill.

The tree was not harmed in the recent fires.

Leashed, polite dogs are welcome. Bring them some lunch too!

RSVP with your cell number and headcount to Esther Crawford at roamschool@gmail.com by December 30

Will reschedule if the rain chance is over 40% or the temps are below 35

This event is sponsored by Everest Academy but open to all homeschoolers. Please review the Everest Academy Participation Policy before attending any of our events.
