Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Iron Pour & Guided Tour Field Trip: The tour starts with our educational film and then students are lead around the site to learn about the raw ingredients, how the furnace worked, the importance of Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham’s iron and steel industry and what it was like to be a worker during production. Students get to experience the site by visiting the underground stock tunnel where the ingredients were loaded in the blast furnace, the blower engine room that dates back to the 1890s, and the base of the blast furnace to see where the molten hot iron flowed for 90 years.

See what it was really like at Sloss Furnaces by seeing molten metal flow in front of your very own eyes! In addition to the guided tour mentioned above, you also get to make your very own piece of cast iron art. Students are provided with a mold that they etch a design in, they see the film and tour the site, then end up in our metal arts foundry to see the molten hot iron flow into the mold they designed. Students get to take their cast iron art home the very same day. This allows students to experience the sights, sounds and smells of iron casting.
  • Iron Pour/Tours are $17/student (or adult who is pouring) and $5/anyone NOT making the art.
  • Children 4 and younger are free.
  • Parent/Teachers are free, unless they are pouring.  Any adults other than parents are $5.
  • Please note that the tour takes place outdoors. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for walking outdoors. Closed toe shoes and pants are required for those pouring.
This event is sponsored by Everest Academy and open to all homeschoolers. Please review the Everest Academy Participation Policy before attending any of our events.
