Cartographers Club
Tuesdays, 4:00pm - 5:30pm. All ages.
Join us every Tuesday this fall as we map lands both real and imagined. Each week, we’ll set out on a map-making adventure, thinking about what makes maps useful tools and what kinds of maps we find most intriguing. We’ll explore the places we know well, like our homes and our neighborhoods, as well as places we’d love to visit in this world and in our imagination. Working individually and as a group, club members will develop a portfolio of maps, stories, and illustrations.Click here to register!
Comic Club
Thursdays, 4:00pm - 5:30pm. All ages.
Hang out with other comics/manga lovers, talk about your favorite books, share tips on drawing characters and learn from professional comic book artists and writers. Comic Club will explore how writers tell their own stories through comics, graphic novels, and many other creative ways. Club members will receive a journal for developing their art and writing, and collaborate to publish an anthology of their own work from 2016.Click here to register!
Letter-Writing Club
Monthly, second Tuesdays, 5:30pm - 7pm. All ages (adults welcome and encouraged!)
Let’s face it, letter writing is a lost art, but not if we can help it! Join us once a month to discuss and create your own letters to send to a loved one, to your future self, or even a stranger. Capitalize on DISCO’s extravagant collection of stationery, but B.Y.O.S. (bring your own stamp)—and beverages.
How you can help DISCO this school year!
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS:
The Desert Island Supply Co. is seeking volunteers to assist in creative writing workshops during the school day at Avondale Elementary, Oliver Elementary and Putnam Middle School. Workshops are one hour, and volunteers must commit to working with the same class (or classes) at the same time each week. A love of reading, writing and creative thinking is required! Experience teaching or working with children is a plus but not required. Volunteer orientation will be held on Sunday, August 21 from 3-5 p.m. In-school programming begins after Labor Day. Interested? Please fill out our volunteer form. Questions? Contact Liz Hughey at liz@deserstislandsupplyco.com.
WISHLISTS:
Our afterschool workshops were very successful last school year and this past summer—but that means our supplies are low! You can help our Comic Club students keep drawing and telling visual stories by making sure they have the tools to keep creating. We’ve set up an Amazon Wishlist for Comic Club Supplies with the writing and drawing tools our students need! We also have an ongoing wishlist of Comic Club Books to grow our library of visual stories for students young and old! Any of these items you purchase directly gives students the tools to read, write, and create stories in DISCO programs. Don’t forget: If you purchase anything on Amazon, DISCO-related or not, be sure to login with this link so that a portion of your spending is donated to DISCO!
BUY THIS BOOK:
The Stars Are Lying is now available for purchase in DISCO’s online store! This collection of poetry features the work of the Woodlawn Writers Corps, our in-school programming with the students of Oliver Elementary and Putnam Middle School. Proceeds from all book purchases directly help the Woodlawn Writers Corps work with more students in the Woodlawn area.
