Calhoun Community College
Calhoun College Theatre’s 2017 spring play will be The Diviners by Jim Leonard, Jr. We will have a school showing on Friday, March 24th at 10am. We only have 50 seats available. So sign up as soon as possible.
Tickets are $8 per student; all teachers and chaperones receive free admission. Adult tickets are limited to no more than 2 per family. This play is appropriate for middle school and up. Please no young children.
Set in the tiny farming community of Zion, Indiana, during the Great Depression, The Diviners is the heart-warming story of the friendship between eleven-year-old Buddy Layman, whose near-drowning as a child left him mentally challenged, and C. C. Showers, a preacher who has lost his faith and is searching for meaning in his life. Buddy’s accident killed his mother and left him terrified of water, but it also endowed him with the ability to “divine,” to find precious water underground for this poor, drought-ridden community.
Life is hard in Zion, but the people face their adversity with faith and hope. The town doesn’t even have a church, since it burned down ten years before, or a preacher, but the arrival of Showers convinces the women that he has been sent by the Lord to provide them with both, a conviction that results in both humor and tragedy.
The Diviners is a hauntingly beautiful and moving play that will have audience members laughing and crying at the same time. It will be Calhoun Theatre’s first show for schools in our new Second Avenue Theatre in the Alabama Center for the Arts in downtown Decatur and will feature live music and singing.
We hope to see you at our new theatre!
