Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Oct. 11, 2017 (Deadline Sep. 29) Bham: Sloss Furnaces Guided Tour and Iron Pour Art

Sloss Furnaces Guided Tour and Iron Pour Art

Where: 20 32nd Street North
                 Birmingham, 35222

When: October 11th 9:00am to 11:00am.  Please plan to arrive no later than 8:45 so that you can check in with me and we can start our tour promptly at 9:00.

Details: The tour consists of an educational film and touring the site to learn about the raw ingredients, how the furnace worked, the importance of Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham’s iron and steel industry and what it was like to be a worker during production. Students experience the site by visiting the underground stock tunnel where the ingredients were loaded in the blast furnace, the blower engine room that dates back to the 1890s, and the base of the blast furnace to see where the molten hot iron flowed for 90 years. In addition to the tour mentioned above, students make their very own piece of cast iron art. Students etch their own design in a sand mold, see the film and tour the site. They complete their visit in our metal arts foundry to watch a live iron pour and see the molten hot iron flow into the mold they designed. Students take their cast iron art home the same day. A unique experience, allowing students to experience the sights, sounds and smells of iron casting. ****You do not have to do the iron pour if you do not want to. You can just attend the tour.****

***Please Note*** Our tour is right in the middle of October. The haunted house runs throughout this month, so there will be props and stuff related to the haunted house all over the site.
