Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Maylene, AL: Homeschool Drumline & Colorguard

Hello Homeschool Families!
Hope you guys are having a great day.  Schools almost done for this academic year and summer is almost upon us.  This is the time when we start planning for next year with the homeschool drumline.   May is our open enrollment push.  We do this so we can adequately prepare for next years football and parade season.  Last year was an awesome year and I expect this year to be even better.  We are so grateful to organizations like yours and all the families that supported us this past year.  We would not be here if it wasn't for organizations like yours sharing what we do to your families.  We currently have 24 students from 6 counties, 7 different homeschool or private Christian schools represented among our ranks.

What in the world does a Homeschool Drumline do?

Great question.  And the answer in short... anything we want to.  We are a bit of an odd animal when it comes to musical groups.  Public school music programs are often set in their schedules and don't vary a lot in what they do.  Don't get me wrong.  They do a lot like football games, parades and competitions.  But often they miss smaller events or they're not able to move such a large group to events do to logistics or costs involved.
We on the other hand play at homeschool football games.  We marching in parades.  Competitions are a possibility and we plan on competing in the future as soon as we are ready.  Independent drumlines are certainly allowed at many competitions.
We also perform at events like the Birmingham Homeschool Conference.  In the past we've also performed at The American Village in Montevallo.  We are scheduled to perform there again twice this year.

Current Schedule

We currently have full band rehearsal on Thursdays at Community Baptist Church in Maylene, AL.  We have a 12:30 to 1 sectional class and a 1 to 2:30 full band rehearsal.  You are more than welcome to come to one or the other (or both).  We also have a Monday Maintenance Class.  This class is at Community Baptist Church on Mondays from 12 to 1:30 and is geared towards the beginner.  All levels are welcome as it helps hone skills needed to become a better percussionist.

What your students would need

I try to keep the initial costs as low as I can.  The Drumline owns the instruments so there is no costs involved from the student in that regard.  We do require the purchase of a pair of drum sticks and a good practice pad.  Lastly is a 3 ring binder to keep the students music.  Also if you already have sticks or pads, use those.  No need to run out and buy if you already have it on hand.  We also have everything posted to an online classroom that each student will have access to.  We do have a few students that can't make the trip twice a week and this helps supplement their practice time at home.

Costs Involved

Costs for this year will remain the same.  The costs for the drumline is $35 per month per student  There is a one time registration fee of $50 also.  The only other costs that can or may come is a band tee shirt and the actual uniform.  I don't foresee these costs being too high.  If we go to any camps or special events there may be costs involved.  There will be plenty of warning before.
Registration Form.  Make sure you fill our and bring in a registration form.  I use these to pull info from to get students set up in the online classroom page as well as contact info.  You can find the link here.

HEY PIANO PLAYERS

Any piano players what want to join are more than welcome.  But we're a drumline, right?  Why would we need piano players?  Great question.  Well we are adding Xylophone, Vibraphone, Marimba and Bell positions on the drumline.  Use and push the limits of your piano skills by putting that knowledge towards a mallet instrument.

COLORGUARD

We are also trying to start a colorguard to perform in conjunction with the drumline.  If you have a student (or know any student that is interested) please let them know about us.  We hope to get at least 6-8 involved.  Ages would still be from 10 and up like the drumline.

In Closing

We are growing and it is awesome to see.  I am so proud of these guys.  All of them are awesome.  I hope that you will share your child with us and share in our vision to build something we all can be proud of.  This can only happen with kids that want to be active in and and parents who support them.  And I already know you support them.  You homeschool... That speaks volumes.
Lastly, keep plugging away.  Keep practicing at home.  Keep learning.  I know drumline is fun.  It offers a challenge, socialization and commitment.  It's hard work sometimes but its rewarding.  It also has the opportunity to help out after high school.  Colleges offer scholarships and are always looking for talented musicians.  Something to file away for later.  At minimum plan on trying to be the best person that you are capable of being.  Focus and work hard.  But keep your eye on the One who gave you this talent.
In Christ,

Mike McGee
