Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. McWane Science Center Teen GENEius Lab

When:Thursday, February 6, 2020 @ 10:30am. Please plan to arrive no later than 10:15, so we can get checked in and the students can get started on time. 

Details: GENE-ius is an engaging laboratory experience in molecular biology and genetics designed for high school biology students in grades 9–12. Using state-of-the-art equipment, participants work in small groups with guidance from UAB students and faculty to complete a challenging lab experiment. Students also have access to McWane Science Center exhibits and programs throughout the day. 

What the Students will be doing: Sickle-Cell Anemia: Tracking Down an Inherited Trait.The molecular basis of this hereditary disease is the main focus as students use electrophoresis to analyze differences in the normal and sickle-cell hemoglobin at the protein and DNA levels. Microscopy of fresh blood smears allows students to observe phenotypic differences between normal and sickle red 
blood cells. This Lab 2 to 2 1/2 hours long. 

After the lab, you are free to explore the museum.  I am planning to take my teens to the Smart Cafe after the lab to have some lunch.  When we finish up lunch, we will hang out and explore the museum. We would love for you to join us.

**Younger siblings are welcome with paid admission, but will not be able to go into the Lab with the teens.  You can explore the museum while the teens are in class with your younger children as long as you provide me with a number you can be reached at.  You must stay at the museum the whole time***

Cost: $8.80 per student, $8.80 per additional sibling over the age of 2 (under 2 is free).  We get one free teacher per family.  Any other chaperone is $5.50.  

Deadline: January 24th There are only 30 spots for this Lab, so they will go quick.  Please RSVP by sending your payment as soon as you can.
