Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Online: Shakespeare History and Renaissance Literature course for 9-12th graders

I am offering a fully online, self-paced, and teacher supported dual credit Shakespeare History and Renaissance Literature course for 9-12th graders.

Dive into turn of 17th century England and explore Renaissance History through the life of William Shakespeare! We will explore theater, food, games, clothing, and major events & people like Queen Elizabeth, Sir Walter Raleigh, the Pilgrims, and more that all lived, worked, and changed the course of history between 1564-1616. Each week, we will listen to the podcast That Shakespeare Life to hear from the world's leading experts on specific topics from Shakespeare's life. We will use detailed history guides packed with archival information and research guides to complete an activity that ties into this period of history. We will learn card games from the 16th century, learn how to make authentic Tudor soap, write your own calligraphy, and more! This class covers Shakespeare's plays through history using activities, history guides, a podcast, and documentaries. This class is primarily a history course, but will include an opportunity to complete MLA style writing assignments throughout the year (with optional lessons on how to submit articles to History Magazines if your student is interested in being a professional writer. I hold a BA in English and can help with writing and grading for students that choose this route). The writing assignments are optional but if you complete them, this class will count as Literature and History together. As the plays themselves are often very difficult to read for beginners, we will not be covering the plays as text (we will not be assigning reading at all). Instead, we will be assigning for students to watch a professional theater performance of each play we cover in the class. I will send students a link to a free version of the play available online each week that they will need to watch. The class assignments will then go over the play they watched & explain the history behind it. Throughout the week students will complete a history lab, watch a play, listen to a podcast episode, and complete an optional writing assignment (MLA style formatting, which I teach students how to use and can support for grading/writing feedback). This class is a fully online course that can be completed at any time of the year and includes full support from Cassidy Cash where you can email for support with questions and grading throughout the year and get a response within 24 hours M-F.
