Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

World Geography Through Food (for highschoolers ages 14 and up)

Description: We can learn so much about a culture through food!  Sharpen your cooking skills, enlighten your palate and join us as we take a trip around the world to learn about different cultures and food.  This is going to be so much fun!!

I will assign a specific region each month.  Students can pick any country in that region to study for the month and learn as much as they can about that country with an emphasis on the food. You can go about this in any way that is best for your family, but there must be cooking involved.  Part of this club is to get the kids in the kitchen cooking.  They need to be cooking food from the country they are studying.

We will meet once a month where each student will be responsible for a visual and verbal presentation on the country they chose to study.  This can be anything from a written report, a tri-fold display, a slide show, a painting, a clay piece, a collage, a comic book layout, a skit, to a short film. It can be anything they are comfortable with that will relay to the class what they learned about the country studied.  Let the students' creativity just go with it!  Everyone has to participate in the presentation, both visual and verbal.

"Eat Your Way Around the World" is a great book you can use as a guide if you are not sure how to start.  It has recipes and short descriptions of each country, little tidbits of information on the food used and some ideas for extra activities to explore further. I will bring this book to the first meet up.

My son and I will be keeping a food journal/recipe notebook with photos of our meals and a map for each of the recipes we try.  I will bring our notebooks as well, so you can get an idea of what we will be doing for the class.

If we have time we may watch a short food film and I will try to have sealed snacks and/or drinks from the region when I can.

When:  Friday, September 3rd, 2021 @ 1:00.  We plan to meet on the first Friday each month from September to May.
