Everest Academy is a ministry of Everest Family Church in Hayden. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off church "cover" school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Cook Museum of Natural Science Events

 

World Lizard Day

When: Saturday, August 14 from 10 am - 2 pm
Cost: FREE for Members* or with General Admission
Join us as we celebrate World Lizard Day at the Cook Museum! You will enjoy Live Animal Presentations with the Education Team, Q&A sessions with the Animal Care Team, and a fun craft to take home and enjoy. Animal Ambassadors at the event may include the bearded dragon, the Mexican alligator lizard, the chuckwalla, and the eastern collared lizard. Animal Ambassadors are subject to change without notice. Please note that guests will not be able to touch the animals.

Schedule:

  • Craft Station: 10 am - 2 pm
  • Live Animal Presentation: 10 am & Noon
    With the Bearded Dragon, Mexican Alligator Lizard, Chuckwalla, & Eastern Collared Lizard

  • Mexican Alligator Lizard Q&A with Animal Care: 11 am & 1 pm
    Little Larvae Learning Series

    When: One Wednesday a month from 9 - 9:45 am 
    September 1, October 6, November 17, & December 15
    Cost: $10 (+ tax) for 1 child & 1 adult; $10 (+ tax) for an additional child
    For children ages 2 - 3
    Come join the fun in these wonderfully engaging and interactive classes that have the smallest of our guests in mind! In each class, children will learn about an animal by listening to stories, singing fun songs, and creating animal-inspired crafts. There will also be a chance to see one of the Museum’s Animal Ambassadors during a Live Animal Presentation. These classes are designed for a caregiver to enjoy this experience with the child. Admission to the Exhibits is not included. Each family group will have their own socially distanced table.

      September Homeschool Classes

      When: Monday, September 13 from 9:30 - 10:30 am

      September Homeschool Class Topics:

      K - 2nd Grade Class: Our Planet Earth – Ecosystems
      Cost: $12 (+ tax) per participant
      The Earth’s ecosystems range from mild to harsh, wet to dry, and hot to cold. Discover many of the different types of living things that inhabit the Earth and the various places they call home.

      3rd - 6th Grade Class: Natural Disasters 2.0
      Cost: $12 (+ tax) per participant
      Volcanoes come in all shapes and sizes around the world. Make your own island volcano after learning about how and where volcanoes form!

      7th - 12th Grade Class: Echinoderm Investigation and Dissection
      Cost: $24 (+ tax) per participant
      Dive deep in the ocean to learn all about the Phylum Echinodermata! Members are symmetrical, vascular, and mysterious. Most people have heard of a sea star and an urchin, the little spiky ball in the ocean, but what is a sea lily? A sea cucumber? Are brittle stars not just thin sea stars? Come learn about these fascinating creatures and all they do to keep the oceans diverse!

          Entomologist for a Day

          When: Monday, September 6 from 8 am - 3 pm
          Cost: $140 (+ tax) per participant, per day, $15 Member Discount
          Grade Level: 4th - 8th
          Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an entomologist or to work at the Cook Museum of Natural Science? What would you have to know? What would you get to do? Experience behind the scenes tours, entomologist classes, independent workstations, and even a grasshopper dissection! Participants will go outside to learn insect collection methods and take home an insect they pinned. Lunch and a t-shirt included. The same activities will be offered at all Entomologist for a Day camps.

            Science on the Spot
            When: Every Saturday at 12:30 pm
            August 14, August 21, & August 28
            Cost: FREE for Members* or with General Admission

              Live Animal Presentation

              When: Tuesdays in August at 3:30 pm
              August 17, August 24, & August 31
              Cost: FREE for Members* or with General Admission
              Join us for this 20-30 minute meet & greet presentation with some of the Museum’s live Animal Ambassadors. Animals included will depend on availability, but could be a chuckwalla, an eastern indigo snake, a Mexican alligator lizard, a scorpion, or one of the other live animals from the Museum. Guests will have the opportunity to ask the Museum staff questions. Please note that guests will not be able to touch the animals. 

                Turtle Q&A with Animal Care

                When: Wednesday, August 18 at 2 pm
                Cost: FREE for Members* or with General Admission
                What does it mean to be a “true turtle”?  Come learn about turtles, tortoises, and terrapins in this brief Question and Answer session with Animal Care.

                  Oceans Tank Feeding

                  When: Wednesdays in August at 3:30 pm
                  August 18 & August 25
                  Cost: FREE for Members* or with General Admission
                  Join us for an Oceans Tank Feeding for the fish every Wednesday in August at 3:30 pm.  Be sure to bring any questions you may have for a brief Q&A time with Animal Care following the feed.

                    Insect Pinning Workshop
                    When: Saturday, August 21 at 10 am & Noon
                    Cost: $30 (+ tax), $5 Member Discount
                    For ages 12 and older
                    Come join us at the Cook Museum for another hands-on insect pinning workshop! This workshop is for all levels. Participants will learn insect orders & anatomy, how to ethically collect & preserve insects, and learn the scientific pinning & labeling methods. Each participant will take home a box of pinned insects, including a bee from the Museum’s colony. Each family group will have their own socially distanced table at which to work, whether you purchase one or more kits. Children 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Admission to the Exhibits is not included.
