Everest Academy is sponsored by Everest Family Ministry in the Birmingham Metro Area. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

The Miniature Earth Project

The Miniature Earth Project is a great website that poses the question: “what if the population of the Earth were reduced into a community of only 100 people?” Based on this assumption, the site helps students understand what the breakdown of nationalities would be, religious representation, how many people would live in an urban area, how many people would have the majority of the world income, how many would live without clean world, those that live on less than $1.25/day, etc. The purpose of the site is to break our quickly approaching 7billion people in the world down to a number (100) that we can more easily wrap our minds around. The point of the site is to help kids (and adults) understand the real landscape of the world and cause positive action.

There is a video on the site that breaks down the infographic in a different way. Students can submit their own videos about the Miniature Earth.

How to integrate The Miniature Earth Project into your curriculum: Right now the Jr. High at Anastasis Academy is looking at the following line of inquiry: “Understanding our rights and responsibilities as individuals and the similarities and differences of others helps contribute to the development of world citizens.” The Miniature Earth Project is a great place to put the world’s challenges in perspective for students. We have been having fantastic conversations about the rights that we enjoy as Americans, and the responsibilities to others around the world that come with those rights. Students have also been exploring rights they believe all world citizens should enjoy and what responsibility they share in making those rights a reality for those who don’t currently enjoy them. As you can imagine, the discussion has been fascinating!

A great place to start this discussion is by asking students to create their own personal code of conduct. What standards will they hold themselves to? At Anastasis we talk often about managing our freedom. Freedom comes with responsibility, it isn’t a free-for all. We also ask students to think about what their actions would look like if it were multiplied by 7 billion people. What would the world look like? Is it a place they would want to live? The Miniature Earth Project is a great place for next steps. Looking at who makes up their world, what kind of challenges are faced. We ask our students to think about solutions to those challenges. They are NOT too young to come up with solutions!

Since the 100 person Earth is such a manageable number, ask students to create graphical representations of each figure presented in the Miniature Earth Project. What questions do they have based on the data? What challenges do they see? What common ground do we have? What are our responsibilities? What rights should we claim for all humans? What are ways that we can make the world a better place for all? What impact can a small change make on such a large population (does it change when you think about it on a smaller scale)?

Oct. 2, Huntsville/Madison County: EMS Explorer Post

Deb,

The HEMSI EMS Post is having their kick-off First Nighter on Tuesday, October 2nd, and I am hoping that you can help us by sharing this information with your contacts in the Huntsville and Madison County area.  Attached is their invitation letter with all the specifics.

We had a good turnout at the Aviation First Nighter this week, and had 3 home school students in attendance.  Thanks for helping connect our Exploring programs to the home school community – I think that it is awesome that we have home school students at just about every one of our kick-off events!

In October, we hit sort of our “second round” of First Nighters.  I am still firming up a few dates, but I will try to get you a fairly complete list next week so that we can start letting students know about upcoming opportunities.

Thanks!

Sep. 27, Shelby Baptist Hospital Explorer Post

Deb,

Thanks for helping us get the word out about the Health Careers Explorer Post at Shelby Baptist Hospital.  I wanted to let you know that their first regular meeting is set for this Thursday, September 27th, and that students who missed the kick-off are still welcome to come and join.  Our experience tells us that there are always a few who were busy, didn’t get the word, or who just plain forgot (because they are teenagers, after all!).  If you can share a reminder, we would appreciate it.

This Post splits their meetings into 2 sessions: one from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and one from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Both sessions are identical, and students are free to choose whichever session best fits their schedule.  They overlap a half hour in the middle for group discussion and pizza.

Interested young people should contact the Post leader, Susan Staniszewski, at susan.staniszewski@bhsala.com for more information.  Thanks for your help!

Sep. 29, Multiple Locations: FREE Parks Entrance

Free Parks Entrance September 29, 2012
In recognition of National Public Lands Day, Alabama State Parks will waive day-use fees on September 29, 2012. Participating parks include those operated by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Locations and directions are found at www.alapark.com.

Day-use fees average $1 to $3 per person at most state parks. Fees for park amenities such as canoe rentals and cave tours will still apply, but there will be no cost for activities like hiking, biking, bird-watching or geocaching.

Parks Director Greg Lein says that National Public Lands Day was designated to recognize all that our public lands have to offer. “If there are people who have never visited a state park, this would be a great time to gather the family, pack a picnic lunch and spend a day enjoying the outdoors,” he said. “Since our state parks are dependent on user fees to operate -- not state taxes -- we hope that people will come back another time and pay the nominal entrance fee to visit a park.” More
