Enjoy the beautiful Little River in the early fall season and learn about this outstanding water source known for its clear water, see different plant and animal life, and find out the history of the area around scenic DeSoto Falls. Many fall migrating butterflies pass through Alabama in September. Come explore and celebrate the beauty and wonder of butterflies, as well as birds with the dedication of Ruffner as an Appalachian Highlands Birding Trail Site. Saturday, Sept. 29 7-8 pm Campfire talk bears at Desoto State Park
Black bears are returning to Alabama and following in their wake are myths, legends, and misconceptions. Once prevalent across the state, black bears are now relegated to small and isolated populations. Fewer than 75 individuals remain within the Alabama borders. The Fort Payne area is fortunate to support a small group of these creatures and researchers are busily working to understand the Alabama population. Free.

Saturday, October 6 --- Shoal Creek Preserve Nature Walk
Shoal Creek Preserve is in Lauderdale County, just north of Florence, AL. Its 298 acres feature 4.5 miles of hiking trails, horse trails, pristine, cascading creeks and a great variety of flora. Sunday, October 14 --- Rockpile Trail Historic Hike, TVA Muscle Shoals Reservation
Local history will be discussed as we traverse the Rockpile Trail from Wilson Dam downstream to Southport, once the site of a thriving steamboat port. This trail features many scenic vistas of the Tennessee River (Pickwick Lake). Eagles, Great Blue Heron and Osprey are regularly spotted in the vicinity of the TVA Rockpile, so bring your binoculars.
