Everest Academy is sponsored by Everest Family Ministry in the Birmingham Metro Area. We offer freedom along with quality resources, information, activities and support to those homeschooling in Alabama. We believe that the parent has the best interests of their children at heart. We believe that the parent is the first and only teacher that a child needs. In keeping with this philosophy, we wish to be a very hands-off cover school and allow the parent to lead and guide their children in the direction and at the pace they feel is best suited to their children. We ask only for what the law requires while offering support along with quality resources to aid families in their efforts.

Teen Scene

Yes!!  Younger siblings welcome at most events!!

Calling All Alabama Homeschooling Teens!

I don't know about you, but I have had to really stretch at times to find social opportunities for my now 17-year-old son. We have had an awesome time with Teen Scene and made MANY new friends. Some of the things we have done with Teen Scene include bowling, movies, bonfire, camping, Galleria, parties, picnics, laser tag, swimming, and just simple "hanging out" and bonding.

  • What is Teen Scene? It is a group specifically for our Alabama homeschooling teens, age 12* and up, to socialize. This group is not educational but SOCIAL. (*Bham Teen Scene is for ages 14 and up.  We offer a Jr. Teen Scene for ages 11 - 14 in the Bham area -  http://www.alabamahomeschooling.com/2010/08/new-jr-teenscene-of-birmingham-social.html)
  • Can younger siblings participate? The outings are for teens only unless the host family states otherwise. For the most part, younger siblings are welcome unless it is something that only teens can do. It is entirely up to the host family. I don't think the teens mind younger sibs being there as long as they don't have to keep up with them.
  • What is a host family? The way Teen Scene works is each family will host an event at least once during the year. This event is whatever the host family chooses. It may be a bonfire, movie night, camping, laser tag, game night, skate night, bowling, etc...
  • Do I have to pay everyone's way? No!!! That does not mean that the host family would bear the financial brunt... It means that the host family sets up an event and gives the details such as cost, date, time, and what to bring. Most events are potluck and pay your own way things. FREE events are really good!!!
  • Where do most events take place? That depends on the host family. Last year we went to Spring Valley Beach in Blount County, Friday Night Flicks in Homewood, ice skating in Hoover, the Galleria, the Play Station in Trussville, swimming in Jasper, a Native American sweat ceremony in Maytown, and many other activities in various places.
  • How much does it cost? Membership in Teen Scene is free. Of course, the outings have differing costs.
  • Do I have to host? Yes... That is the only requirement to being in Teen Scene. You must commit to hosting at least once during the year. When you request to sign up, please give a month that you can host.
  • What if I don't have time to host right now? Set a date a few months out when you think things might settle down and pick something simple where people can just show up. You don't have to do anything major. These teens just want to hang out anyway.
  • How often does Teen Scene meet? That is entirely up to the host families. At least once a month is the goal.

Please remember that the Teen Scene and Jr. Teen Scene groups are Everest Academy sponsored groups. Please review the Everest Academy Participation Policy here.  Please note that drug and alcohol use at any event is prohibited.

Contact Information:
Please note that these groups are maintained on Facebook.  Please request membership to the desired group below.  At the same time of the membership request, please send an email to Deb Spradlin ~ everestacademy1@gmail.com stating the month you would like to host.  If I do not receive an email from you stating the month you can host, then I will send you a Facebook message asking you what month you want to host.  Please note that if I do not receive an email and I am unable to send you a private message on Facebook, then I will refuse your request for membership.  **If you are interested in joining the Jr TeenScene of Bham, please use the link below ~ JTSB is coordinated by Briana Moore.

April 9 - 11, Huntsville: SAT Testing 2nd - 11

Hi Guys,

This info was sent to me. I do not have any further information. Please contact the folks listed in the posting. For more information on standardized testing, please look here: http://www.alabamahomeschooling.com/2010/01/standardized-testing.html.

Thanks,
Deb

STANFORD ACHIEVEMENT TESTING-- April 9-11, 2013, 9a.m.

Dear Homeschool Parents,

I will be offering SAT testing for grades 2-11, April 9-11 from 9:00-12:00 ish. Testing will be at Flint River Baptist Church, Meridianville, AL, in conjunction with Tennessee Valley Fellowship Coop. Grouping for testing will be : 2nd, 3rd, 4th-6th, 7th-8th, 9th-11th. The tests are different for the combined groups, but instructions and timing are the same.

Thursday, we will run over a little, as we will end with a pizza party. We’ll collect money for the pizza that week, usually about $2 each.

High Schoolers will test for 2 days. We will determine those two days, according to the schedules of families involved. High Schoolers can use calculators.

Fees are different this year for grades 2&3
Grade 2 and 3 (consumable book) $45, $46.50 by paypal
Grade 4-11, $35, $36.50 by paypal
Paypal to: fhouck8@gmail.com
Deadline for registration is Friday, Feb. 1, 2013

I take cash and check, or paypal (with paypal fee included). If your child has any special needs regarding testing, I need to be aware of this whenyou register....make a note to me. The children need to be calm during testing.. no annoying noises, pencil tapping etc., as it will disturb their neighbors. We do take breaks, so they are not sitting the WHOLE 3 hour time.. we can stretch, go to the bathroom, etc. after each section, the longest being just under an hour. We take a snack break about halfway through. (form at end of this)

If you have a 4 year degree and would be willing to help with testing, contact me, even if you’d just be available for a day, or willing to act as a substitute.

They've changed some of the way one registers, so call and talk to BJU!

This is a joint effort, and we will need an ON SITE nursery/playgroup if testers have small children needing care.

Moms, you are welcome to stay and visit with other uninvolved moms. I always need a few extra sets of eyes :) If you will not be staying at Flint River, I will need a contact person/cell phone #, in case of any emergency.

TEST PREP:
If interested in test preparation materials, you may be able to get them from Bob Jones 1-800-845-5731, call and ask. The one from Rainbow Resources is called Scoring High on the Stanford Achievement Test, and is for grades 1-8. Teacher books are around $10, students around $4 I found it to be more involved and worth the money than the one Bob Jones offered in the past (personal opinion). Rainbow Resources 1-888-841-3456. You can order these things yourself.

Remind your children that we are GUESTS of Flint River Baptist Church, and to act accordingly :)

What to bring:
#2 pencils, sharpened
snack--the healthier the better :)
light jacket or sweater.. dress in layers, the temperature varies and they need to be comfortable.
Doors open no later than 8:45 AM
Be there, ready to start by 9AM sharp!

Directions:
Flint River Baptist Church is on Hwy 231/431. It is in Meridianville, by Meridianville Middle School. It is north of the Publix on the Parkway.

You may share this information with other homeschoolers in the area who are in need of testing, as this is an open testing site.

Contact me if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,
Freida Houck

Feb. 17 Deadline, State Wide: American Legion Rhetorical Contest

Hey Guys,

This opportunity is something that was sent to me. Below is all of the info that I have. I am not planning to do a contest, but wanted to pass on the info in case one of you wanted to head up something.

American Legion Rhetorical Contest--worth LOTS of scholarship money

Sat Jan 19, 2013 7:12 am (PST) . Posted by:

"Amanda" hileyvaughan

Hi--I have uploaded 2 files regarding the American Legion Oratorical Contest Scholarship Program. It is a speaking contest based on the US Constitution. State winners win a LOT of scholarship money from American Legion, but there almost every public and private college in the state give even more money to that winner. There is also a national winner.

Homeschooled kids are welcome. Schools must have contests by Feb. 17--the Lee County District contest is Feb. 23. Kids in a cover school can certainly apply and I don't think it would be hard for cover school groups to pull together a contest of their interested kids.

Please check out this opportunity---Mike Kosalapoff, a retired teacher from AHS, now part-time at Lyman Ward, is the contact. He is very interested in this reaching homeschooled kids. His email is kosalapoff@bellsouth.net.

Good luck! Lots of smart kids out there could take home some serious college money!
